Welsh River Trials 2006

Three Teifi Trout Association members and their controllers attended the Welsh River Trials to compete for places in the Welsh rivers team at the beginning of September.

Tym Twm, Nigel James and his cousin took part in the competition, but unfortunately none qualified, however they all caught fish including a perfect 42cm brown trout for Nigel James, pictured below. The day was very difficult, it didn't stop raining at all and the river steadily rose and had became a torrent by the afternoon. As the evening arrived everyone was thoroughly soaked and relieved to call it a day. Merthyr Vale's Daggers Club offered a very welcome respite from the wet and the pints helped to bring back some hoel as the results were compiled by Moc Morgan, Julia Davies and Edgar George. Congratulations to Brian Morgan - top rod - Allen Hughes, Dean Kibble, Jonathan Williams, "Bushy" and Gavin Perry reserve,we all wish you well in the competition.

I hope that the pictures show how well Merthyr Tydfil Angling Association have maintained their waters on the upper Taff - when you're fishing there it's hard to believe that there's a post industrial landscape surrounding the river and that the area was badly polluted not so long ago. One pleasant surprise was the size of some of the salmon parr that were caught and quickly returned, what a pity the Taff barrage is hindering their progress.

All of the pictures were taken in the area around Aberfan, it's only a fraction of the water which the club controls and makes available through day tickets to visiting anglers. Despite the dreadful weather the quality of the environment is plain to see. A big "thank you" to MTAA members for all the hard preparatory work for the day and for sharing their river with the competitors.
